Abstract

The present paper deals with the sociolinguistic situation of the Berber language (Amazighe) in Morocco today. The main issues dealt with are the following: (i) the marginalization of Berber within the linguistic market as a result of its exclusion from the prestigious domains of social usage by standard languages (mainly Standard Arabic and French); (ii) the progressive attrition of Berber in urban areas to the benefit of colloquial Arabic; (iii) the structural dependency of Berber toward Arabic, French, and Spanish in terms of linguistic borrowing; (iv) the contradictory query of Berber identity oscillating between a dissociative and a cumulative identity. The analysis of these issues is supported by empirical data.
